As the President of Ryerson stated on the cbc last week, they were underfunded as a polytechnic and felt they needed University status. These "polytechnics" are in fact well-established universities as well (with roots in the college level). The proposal calls for Saint John's university to be reduced to a polytechnic, losing university status.
